GABA for Concentration

Gamma-aminobutyric acid, better known as GABA is a form of amino acid generated by the mammalian brain. GABA supplement is a noted natural tranquilizer and acts as one of the inhibitory neurotransmitters found in abundance. Its major role is to regulate the neuronal excitation happening in our central nervous system, which can contribute to disorder like nervousness, anxiety, movement disorders, epilepsy, lack of concentration and many such mental blocks.

GABA Supplement Benefits the Mind

Time and time again, GABA supplements have been proved to be one of the best ways to treat mental blocks, sleep disorder and nervousness. GABA has a soothing property that allows our mind and body to relax and be at ease. It is a natural supplement with numerous benefits and it is a great aid to:

  • Healthy memory and cognitive functions
  • Improved concentration
  • Reduces fatigue , anxiety, stress and weakness which leads to nervousness and lack of concentration
  • Sleep disorders

GABA is produced by the brain in ample quantities to support healthy life and facilitates proper functioning of the mind and body. GABA deficiency is rarely noticed, but these days we humans are highly exposed to environmental toxins and external stressors, which increase the rate of depletion of GABA, form our body. Deficiency can lead to muscle tension, fatigue, weakness, nervousness, anxiety, irritability and depression.

Absentmindedness or lack of concentration can lead to genuine problems in life. It is necessary to concentrate in our work and produce good results for the betterment of our life.

How GABA Helps with Concentration

Clear thinking and alertness of the mind are basic components of concentration. To attain concentration our mind needs to relax. GABA helps in the mind’s relaxation and acts as a calming agent for our mind and body as well. This in turn allows us to concentrate in what we intend to do.

GABA induces sleep, which is very important for the relaxation of our body and mind. An average adult needs 7 to 8 hours of undisturbed sleep, and only then the person can perform well.

About Concentration

Concentration can also be attained with the help of meditation yoga. These are the basic techniques of releasing stress from our mind. Concentration literally means “the act or state of bringing to a fixed point or focus.” Mental concentration improves with practice and time.

Our mind is very restless and has a tendency to flow along with anything that it comes across. One moment you find the mind dancing to your tunes and the very next moment it is occupied by something else that draws attention. But the mind, by nature cannot stick to something; it behaves like a pampered brat. Some of us get carried away by something that appeals our fancy, involuntarily, and end up forgetting everything that is around us. That’s how our mind functions.

But when there is a deficiency of GABA, the mind and the physical self loses interest on everything and cannot concentrate on a particular work or object. Restlessness then reaches a peak and might lead to complications.

GABA is a through treatment for these disorders and is a non-addictive natural way of treating mental blocks.

Can you provide links to actual tests that back up your claims? All research that I have read about suggest that GABA will not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it simply passes through your system without ever hitting your brain. Can you elaborate on your claims please?

    Hello Eric,

you frequently read on the internet that GABA doesn’t pass the blood brain barrier (BBB). This may be true or not.

Everybody I know, who tried GABA, notices effects of it, some more, some less. It works, that’s what I can say out of personal experience. If it doesn’t pass the BBB, it works in another way. Perhaps it passes the BBB, because it is damaged/weakend in most people nowadays, whatever.

If you have an academic interest in the topic, you should perhaps search for study data to start with.

I am looking for a safe alternitive to adderal and came across information on Gaba. It sounds like it would be perfect for me except the part about sleep. I take 20 mg of adderal each day before work so I can concentrate better. That works great for me but according to what I found about Gaba, it will put me to sleep. Working in a very busy E.R. I can not be at all drowsy. If anyone has any suggestions on what I could do, please let me know. Thank you, Tam. (8-23-14)
