How GABA Calms You

Gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA is an abundant inhibitory neurotransmitter produces in the brain and it regulates the activities of our brain and nerve cells by restraining large number of neurons firing in our brain.

GABA is known to be “the brain’s natural calming agent.” GABA fosters relaxation and sleep and simplifies the nervous disorders of the brain by restraining over-stimulation. It can be called an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, relaxing and calming nutrient.

Reduced levels of GABA in our brain and central nervous system can cause anxiety, depression, stress and insomnia. Most of the anti-depressants, prescribed by doctors are mainly used for increasing the level of GABA. The neurotransmitter characteristic of GABA helps in proper functioning of the brain and the nerve cells which produces a focusing and calming effect. This typical behavior of GABA is highly acknowledged in the community of mental health. GABA prevents overloaded nervous system disorders which is the prime cause of stress and anxiety. Major overloads can even cause hypertension and lack of concentration and judgments.

The best and probably the safest way of treating yourself is to have a diet that triggers the neurotransmitter production. GABA encourages more complex carbohydrates to be made a part of your daily diet. Complex carbohydrates raise the level of glutamine (an amino acid), and leads to the creation of GABA.

Treat yourself with a GABA- friendly diet and minimize the intake of large portions of food comprising of simple sugar, flours (white) and some of the wheat products. But do not leave aside whole grains.

High level of glutamic (an amino acid that leads to the production if GABA) foods include:
